On May 20, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, Deputy Minister of National Defence, received Mr. W. M. Winfield, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for Prisoner of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) Office on the occasion of his working visit in Hanoi.
On behalf of the leadership of the Ministry of National Defence, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh welcomed Mr. W. M. Winfield and the US delegation for their working visit in Vietnam and hoped that the visit will help promote the search activities for the remains of servicemen of both countries who died during the war in Vietnam.
Over the past years, at the bilateral meeting between Vietnam and US, Vietnam has always mentioned the cooperation to search for US servicemen remains from the war in Vietnam, considering it a deed that demonstrates the humanitarian and goodwill of the Vietnamese Government and the people, helping ease the pain of the family members of US servicemen who went missing during the war in Vietnam.
Deputy Nguyen Chi Vinh also suggested that Mr. W. M. Winfield continue research to provide initiatives hastening search activities for the remains of missing servicemen of both countries from the war, as well as join Vietnam in solving the consequences of the war, such as the disposal of bombs and mines, the detoxification of AO/dioxin in Vietnam and humanitarian support.
US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence W. M. Winfield on behalf of his delegation thanked Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh for his warm reception and said that during the past 25 years, the US side has received valuable and effective help from Vietnamese Government, war veterans and people in the search for the remains of US servicemen who went missing during combat in Vietnam. He hopes that the Vietnam Ministry of National Defence and people will continue to create favourable conditions for the US side in searching for US servicemen remains in the central areas in the future./.
