A Nigerian man has been arrested in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho for allegedly cheating a Vietnamese woman out of thousands of dollars.
City police said Wednesday that they had received in March they a complaint from a woman named Nguyen Thi Ngoc N., 45, who accused Okoye Uchenna, 36, a resident of Ho Chi Minh City, of fraud.
N. said she had befriended online a man who introduced himself as Piero Dwain from the UK. After several online chats, Dwain had told her that he wanted to come to Vietnam to do business and asked N. to marry him.
On March 26 the man called her saying he was on his way to Vietnam.
A few minutes later another man who introduced himself as a Malaysian police officer, called N. and said Dwain had been arrested at a Malaysian airport for illegally carrying 600,000 British pounds.
A fine of US$1,600 had to be paid for Dwain to be released, he said.
N. remitted the money to a Techcombank account belonging to Vo Thi Xuan Hong, 51, of Dong Nai Province.
The “cop” then called N. again and demanded an additional $3,600 because of the large sum of money Dwain had brought with him.
