MAPUTO (VNS)— Viet Nam and Mozambique have agreed to ramp up cooperation in agriculture following talks between Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and Mozambican Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Odemiro Baloi, on an official two day visit to the African nation last week.
Hosting a reception for the Vietnamese minister, Minister Baloi emphasised the importance of strengthening ties and boosting bilateral trade. The Vietnamese FM affirmed the friendship between the two countries, calling Mozambique as an important partner in the African region.
In a move to strengthen political ties, the ministers pledged more official visits to forge links between all levels of government and agreed to maintain a close relationship between the Communist Party of Viet Nam and Mozambique Liberation Front.
Trade was also high on the agenda with discussions of potential partnerships in construction, mining and fuel exploration, and an agreement to develop an official memorandum of understanding.
The two ministers also named education, healthcare and telecommunications as important areas for cooperation in the near future. In the meantime, Mozambique has agreed to assist Vietnamese firms producing medicines in the country.
In the same discussion, both sides praised the outcomes of a trilateral project between Viet Nam, Japan’s International Cooperation Agency and Mozambique, in Zambezia Province.
Both ministers also pledged closer cooperation in multilateral fora to support expanding ties between the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The leaders also shared their opinions on regional issues, affirming that tensions in the East Sea should be resolved peacefully and in accordance with international law.
Minh later met with Mozambique’s Prime Minister, Alberto Vaquina, who requested Viet Nam’s assistance with agriculture, aquaculture and vocational training to develop the African nation.
The Prime Minister also praised current efforts by Vietnamese telecom provider Viettel-Movitel, saying the network was revolutionising communications in Mozambique.
Minh also met with Maputo municipal leaders; attending a ceremony for the installation of a “Ho Chi Minh Avenue” plaque on a street dedicated to President Ho Chi Minh. The street was named in 1977 by Mozambique’s first President Samora Moisos Machel.
Minh also met with acting Minister of Natural Resources and Mining Abdul Razak and Minister of Agriculture Jose Pacheco.
The visit completed a three-country tour of Africa where Minh also visited South Africa and Angola. — VNS
