All the mung bean and soybean milk samples taken in Ho Chi Minh City for quality tests did not meet the aerobic microorganism standard, the Food Safety Sub-Department reported.
The samples were taken randomly last month from peddlers in six districts, including Districts 1, 3 and 5 and Tan Binh, Binh Thanh and Go Vap Districts.
The tests made on these 16 samples showed that all of them failed to meet the standard on counts of aerobic microorganism. Five of these samples did not meet yeast and fungi while seven of them were unqualified in terms of Coliform bacteria, a commonly used bacterial indicator of sanitary quality of foods and water.
The sub-department also took five samples of aromatic spices and the tests showed that all of them contained no heavy metals.
Meanwhile, the Health Ministry’s Food Safety Department has asked the sub-department to strengthen control over producers of food to prevent the use of borax and saccharin – two substances that are harmful to human health – in food production.
The department also urged the sub-department to take and test samples of powder products that are advertised to be able to make food – like meat, sweet porridge – tender soon after being cooked.
The sub-department should identify the chemical compositions of such powder and specify their impacts on human health, the department said.
The result of the testing and relevant reports must be sent to the department before October 30, 2013, the department added.
