(VOV) – Vietnam wants to expand mutually beneficial cooperation with African nations, including Namibia, State President Truong Tan Sang has said.

During high-level talks in Hanoi on November 19 for visiting President Hifikepunye Pohamba, President Sang thanked Namibian people for supporting Vietnam in its past struggle for national independence and the current cause of national construction and development.

He spoke highly of the impressive achievements Namibia has made in national development, especially its contributions to peace, stability and cooperation in the South African Development Community (SADC) and Africa as a whole.

For his part, President Pohamba expressed his admiration for Vietnamese people’s past struggle for national independence, and their tremendous achievements during the current Doi Moi (Renewal) process, considering them a source of encouragement to Namibian people in national liberation and development.

He announced Namibia’s decision to recognize Vietnam’s full market economy status.

President Sang welcomed Namibia’s decision as an important contribution to the fine and trusted relationship between the two countries.

Both host and guest shared the view that multifaceted cooperation has yet to match the two countries’ potential and live up to their leaders’ expectations.

To better tap their potential, they agreed to increase political ties through visit exchanges, strengthen people-to-people diplomacy and effectively implement tripartite cooperation projects on agricultural production.

They said they will encourage their relevant ministries and agencies to draw up specific plans for boosting cooperation in investment, trade, education-training, health care, tourism, and aviation services.

Presidents Sang and Pohamba also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern, and were happy that Vietnam and Namibia were recently elected to the UN Human Rights Council for the 2014-16 term.

Both sides said they will work closely together at multilateral forums and within the framework of South-South cooperation, for peace stability, cooperation and development in the world.

After talks, the two presidents witnessed the signing of an agreement on visa exemptions for official and diplomatic passport holders, and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on agricultural cooperation.

President Pohamba invited President Sang to visit Namibia, and the invitation was accepted with pleasure. The visit will be arranged through diplomatic channels.
