Chief of Joint Staff of the Japanese Self-Defence Forces Shigeru Iwasaki held talks with his Myanmar counterpart Min Aung Hlaing in the Southeast Asian country’s Nay Pyi Taw capital city on May 27.

This is the first visit of a Japanese highest-level army chief to Myanmar since World War II.
During his four-day stay, Iwasaki was scheduled to meet President U Thein Sein on May 28.
In May last year, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe toured Myanmar, becoming the first Japanese PM to the Southeast Asian nation since 1977.
Japan had no military relations with Myanmar since 1945. However, the two sides have still maintained trade and investment ties. Japan decided to clear 300 billion JPY (2.94 billion USD) of the 500 billion JPY debt owed by Myanmar.-VNA
