Overall, the total number of active mobile subscribers is around 121.12 million, dropping 2.1 million compared to the beginning of the year and an even sharper fall compared to 136 million the same time last year.

On the other hand, the telecom sector has seen a continued fall in the number of landline subscribers, which currently stands at only seven million compared to 9.47 million one year earlier.

The decrease in the number of landline subscribers is expected to continue as mobile phones are cheaper and more convenient, according to Vietnamplus.

The ministry also noted that the number of ADSL users as of June 2014 had surged by 300,000 against the same time last year to 5.5 million.

The ministry’s report also indicated that telecom revenue reached VND122 trillion, accounting for 44% of this year’s target.

In the next six months, the ministry will seek to develop a sustainable telecom sector, control OTT (over-the-top) service and improve policies to manage pre-paid subscriptions.
