Representatives of PVN and Lilama inked the EPC contract in Hanoi last Friday. The project requires a total investment of more than VND43 trillion (some US$1.99 billion).
The thermal power plant in Chau Thanh District in Hau Giang Province is designed to have two generators of 1,200 megawatts (MW).
Lilama is expected to construct and commission the first generator within 48 months and the second generator in 52 months before transferring the whole thermal power plant to PVN, which is the investor of the multi-billion-dollar project.
Also on Friday, Lilama clinched a contract worth US$780 million to choose South Korean group Doosan as the main equipment supplier for the mammoth power project.
Scheduled for coming online in 2019, the entire Song Hau 1 thermal power plant will generate 7.8 billion kWh a year for the nation’s electricity grid.
Song Hau 1 is one of the 57 thermal power projects in Power Master Plan VII. These facilities are designed to have a combined capacity of 36,000MW by 2020 and 75,700MW by 2030, or 47% and 56% of the country’s total power output respectively.
In addition to Song Hau 1, the Mekong Delta is home to Song Hau 2, thermal power plants Duyen Hai 1, 2 and 3 in Tra Vinh Province; Long Phu 1, 2 and 3 in Soc Trang Province; Kien Luong in Kien Giang Province; the Can Tho Thermal Power Center and Ca Mau Gas-Power-Fertilizer Complex.
According to Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), power consumption in the country was nearly 128 billion kWh last year, increasing 12.3% over the previous year. The demand could rise to around 142 billion kWh this year if the local economy expands 6.2%.
Lilama has been the EPC contractor for various thermal power projects, including Ca Mau 1 and 2, Nhon Trach 1 and 2, Vung Ang 1, Mong Duong 1 and 2, and Thai Binh 2.
