Nguyen Duy Dung, 46, from the central province of Quang Nam, on May 31 became the winner of “Tieng Hat Mai Xanh” (Evergreen Voice), the annual singing contest for middle-aged and elder music fans across the country.

At the final night of the contest held by Ho Chi Minh Television, Dung won the highest prize with 62.62% votes after his performance of the songs “Vi Do La Em” (Because it’s you) and “Mua Thu Khong Tro Lai” (Autumn isn’t back).

Dung also received the prize from the judges who are local lifestyle journalists for his positive influence on the society through his story.

At the previous round, Dung has touched audiences when he emotionally performed the song “Cong Me Di Choi” (Give mom a piggyback for outing) on stage. A number of audiences even moved in tears knowing the real-life story of a small souvenir shop owner in Hoi An who has taken care of his paralysed mother for eight years.

71-year-old Mai van Dang, impressed audiences and the jury not only with his voice but only his incredible energy to overcome his cancer. In 2013, he had undergone 16 courses of radiotherapy.

“I join the competition in order to let my friends know that I’m recovered,” the most elderly of the contest shared.

Mai Van Dang and Tran Ngoc Hoa, 53, won the runner-up titles.

Besides the awards, the three winners will have chances to work together in recording a CD including 9 love songs.

Kicked off in February, this year’s competition attracted more than 3,000 middle-aged and elder participants across the country. First launched in 2011, “Evergreen Voice” has gone beyond a TV show and offered a meaningful playground for people with old ages but forever young voice and passion of singing.
