The team of Croatia in Zagreb Agricultural University are testing the bees to detect mines left in Croatia and the Balkans in the 1990s.
Bees were trained by testing the air smelled of aroma and explosives and then let them search for explosives detection. GS Kezic said: “The conclusion of our first steps as bees can detect the target and we are very pleased.”
The program of the study group had received millions in funding from the EU for mines detection project mentioned above is called Tiramisu.
Previously, the U.S. researchers were also testing the bees to detect mines but not tested for TNT explosives because this explosive supposed to lose flavor as well as more dispersed over time it difficult to detect. Rats and dogs are also looking for explosives test, but due to the weight the two species are easy to make mines exploded.
Croatian officials estimated that nearly two decades after the war’s end was a land mine killed 316 people, including 66 expert definers. Around 90,000 mines have been installed in 4 years of war over an area of 750 km2 and installed most random, not having any guidance scheme.
