(VOV) -Vietnam should participate in the 1997 UN Convention on the Law of Non-navigational Use of International Watercourses, said experts.

The proposal was made at a seminar held in Haiphong city on June 17 by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Center for Sustainable Development of Water Resources and Adaptation to Climate Change (CEWAREC).

The focus of discussions was on ensuring water management and sustainable use of water resources.

Nguyen An Nien from the HCM City Science and Technology Association said that Vietnam’s admission to the 1997 UN Convention will help prevent the strong flow of water to the lower Mekong region, improve irrigation networks and protect the environment. This will force the country to complete zoning plans on water management, he added.

At present, 30 countries have ratified the Convention adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on May 21, 1997, which takes into account the problems affecting many international watercourses resulting from increasing demands and growing pollution, as well as ensuring the utilization, development, conservation, management and protection of international watercourses for present and future generations.
