The Hanoitimes - Foreign Ministers from 10 ASEAN member countries convened 46th meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.
The meeting aims to review progress of the implementation of the regional leaders’ decisions since the 22nd ASEAN Summit last April, including matters related to the Roadmap of the ASEAN Community, ASEAN’s future direction and ASEAN’s external relations.
ASEAN Foreign Ministers will also meet with counterparts from three Northeast Asian countries, namely China, Japan and the Republic of Korea to discuss cooperation programs with each of the bloc’s partners.
Other meetings taking place in Brunei include the Post Ministerial Conference (PMC) / 20th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) / 3rd East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (EAS FMM).
"We are working on efforts to build a resilient, dynamic and sustainable Community by 2015 and the potentials for strengthening coordination and collaboration between ASEAN and Dialogue Partners in working towards mutual understanding, political dialogue and friendly cooperation," said ASEAN Secretary-General Le Luong Minh as he prepares to join the meeting.
During the 22nd ASEAN Summit, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung affirmed ASEAN needs to maintain its common voice and central role to uphold peace, stability, maritime security and safety in the East Sea.
PM Dung emphasized the importance of realizing the goals and principles in the East Sea, especially the strong support to the Declaration on Six-point Principles on the East Sea, the settlement of disputes by peaceful means without the use of force, observation of international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and the early conclusion of the Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).
