The Ministry of Education and Training has announced that the three golds went to gifted students from schools in HCMC and the central province of Ha Tinh, while the silver medals were secured by their peers from Hanoi, the northern province of Vinh Phuc and the central province of Nghe An.
Gold winners are Vo Anh Duc from Ha Tinh, and Pham Tuan Huy and Can Tran Thanh Trung from HCMC. Dinh Le Cong, Tran Dang Phuc and Hoang Do Kien all netted silvers.
The results helped Vietnam to a very respectable 7th place among the 97 participating countries and territories – the country’s best performance since 2008.
Last year, the Vietnamese maths team recovered strongly to place in the top ten after a dismal showing in 2011 when the country slipped to 31st place – its worst ever performance.
The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with seven countries participating. It has gradually expanded to over 100 countries from five continents.
The IMO Advisory Board ensures that the competition takes place each year and that each host country observes the regulations and traditions of the IMO. Vietnam has been involved in the contest since 1974.
