City hands low-cost apartments to workers

The HCM City People’s Committee on Friday handed over 100 low-cost apartments in To Hien Thanh Building in District 10 to government workers.


They are part of 3,000 apartments expected to be handed over this year.


The apartments cost VND12 million (US$571) per square metre, and buyers are allowed to pay 20 per cent down and the rest in 10 years along with interest of 6 per cent.

Ha Noi paves way for Old Quarter relocation


The Ha Noi People’s Committee has decided to build a new residential area for people living in its old quarter.


It will be situated in the Viet Hung Urban Area in Long Bien District, and contain 16 nine-storey housing blocks with 6,500 units.


The project will be undertaken from 2014 to 2017 at a cost of more than VND4.9 trillion (over $233 million).

7,200 applied for overseas jobs in July


More than 7,200 people applied for foreign jobs last month, according to the Overseas Labour Management Department.


Over 47,000 people have gone abroad so far this year, or 55 per cent of the year’s target.


Of them, 23,270 people have gone to Taiwan, 5,068 to Japan, and 4,904 to Malaysia.

Tobacco harm-prevention fund set up


The Government has established a Fund for Tobacco Harm Prevention and Control under the Ministry of Health.


The fund, to be managed by the Finance Ministry, consists of compulsory financial contributions from tobacco producers and importers as well as voluntary donations from domestic and foreign offices, organisations and individuals. Revenue from bank-deposit interest is also included.


The non-profit fund oversees the mobilisation, supply and coordination of financial resources for tobacco – prevention and control nationwide.


It also supports anti-tobacco activities including public campaigns that will disseminate messages about the negative aspects of smoking to specific groups. In addition, pilot smoke-free areas will be set up.


Community-based campaigns and initiatives will help smokers kick the habit.


According to the World Health Organisation, Viet Nam has 15 million smokers. It is one of 15 countries with the highest rate of cigarette smokers in the world (48 per cent for men and 1.4 per cent for women).
