HCM CITY (VNS)— Nearly 600 young volunteers from Red Cross branches nationwide and from overseas Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are participating in the 4th Young Volunteers Camp that opened yesterday in HCM City.

Of these, 30 international volunteers are from Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Japan, Singapore and Thailand.

During the four-day camp, the participants will undertake a series of humanitarian activities including presenting gifts to orphans and disabled children and walking in the Dam Sen Cultural Park to raise funds for victims of Agent Orange.

The camp aims to reward young volunteers from Red Cross chapters in the country for their deep involvement in helping the community, said Nguyen Hai Duong, Chairman of the Viet Nam Red Cross Society.

It is also a platform for Vietnamese volunteers to share their knowledge and experience with international peers, Duong said.

More than 3.2 million youngsters are members of Red Cross chapters nationwide, participating in various humanitarian activities including blood donations, caring for Agent Orange victims and raising awareness on HIV prevention, he said.

“The camp is a great chance for me to interact with members of other Red Cross chapters and learn what they do,” said Tilynn Low of Singapore.

“We will try to do our best to raise funds for helping Agent Orange victims in Viet Nam,” she said. —VNS
