Vietnamese Grandmaster Le Quang Liem overcame world No 4 Alexander Grischuk in his first leg match of the World Chess Cup’s round three match in Tromso, Norway on Saturday.

Liem, Elo 2,712, defeated his Russian rival, Elo 2,785, after 44 moves.

This is the second time that Liem has beaten Russian No 1 Grischuk this year after his victory in the World Blitz Chess Championships in June, when Liem became champion.

The second leg of the round was due to be held late yesterday.

Liem is now Viet Nam’s only representative in Norway as his teammate Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son was knocked out after his second round match, losing to Russian Dmitry Andreikin on Friday. — VNS
