More than 620 accidents occurred across Viet Nam in the first half of this month, killing 244 persons and injuring 364 others, according to the Ministry of Public Security.


Road accidents topped the list followed by rail.


Last week police nation-wide pulled up 65,000 motorists for violating traffic laws, seizing 124 cars and 6,600 motorbikes.

Viet Nam, Russia eye closer tourism ties


Viet Nam and Russia will discuss plans to jointly develop tourism in 2013-15 at a meeting to be held in HCM City next month.


The two countries will discuss ways to attract more Russian visitors to Viet Nam with a “Vietnamese Tourism Year in Russia” next year.


It will feature several shows and exhibitions in Russia and set up of an association of tourism operators who plan to explore the Russian tourism market.

Tra Vinh to develop shrimp industry


The Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Tra Vinh has approved plans to develop infrastructure for the shrimp farming industry in Duyen Hai and Tra Cu Districts.


The VND380 billion (US$18 million) project is part of a larger project to develop aquaculture.

Da Nang needs more houses for workers


The central city of Da Nang is encouraging people to build and upgrade houses for workers and has demanded that banks reduce interest rates while lending for this purpose.


The city said around 65,000 people work in the city’s industrial zones and two-thirds of them are in urgent need of housing.


But supply cannot meet demand, with five to seven workers often sharing a 12-14sq.m room due to low income, it said.

Can Tho attracts $880m investment


The Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta city of Can Tho has this year issued licences for 57 projects with a total investment of nearly US$880 million.


The investment for the period is the biggest ever for the city, officials said, thanks to efforts to improve administrative procedures and reduce land-use and leasing costs.
