HA NOI (VNS)— Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has urged the northern province of Hai Duong to make the most of its advantages in infrastructure and human resources to spur on growth around the locality.
Hai Duong needed to take the initiative when looking for dynamic and creative methods so it could move forward in a rapid and sustainable manner, the PM said at a meeting with the province’s key officials in the capital yesterday.
The locality was asked to drastically restructure its economy, focusing on improving productivity, quality and the competitive edge of products and services.
The Government leader suggested large-scale agricultural development, closely interlinked with the production and processing industry, market expansion and technical applications.
After asking the province to attract more investment and step up industrial production, especially high-tech projects, Dung also stressed on the importance of protecting the environment.
He urged the locality to attach more importance to developing its socio-economic infrastructure, especially transport and irrigation, and carry on with the programme to build new-style rural areas.
The province needs to focus on vocational training and job generation while implementing social welfare and poverty reduction policies, said the leader.
Dung praised the efforts made by the provincial Party Committee, authorities and people to overcome their difficulties and challenges to make real achievements in various areas, especially its economic recovery in the first half of this year.
According to Chairman of Hai Duong People’s Committee Nguyen Manh Hien, the province’s average growth rate rose slightly from 9.3 per cent in 2011 to 9.4 per cent last year and its GDP increased by 7.2 per cent while budget contributions were up 34 per cent during the January-June period.
The locality also pocketed US$1 billion from exports in the first six months of the year, up by 36.2 per cent over the same period last year.
Hai Duong is striving to record an economic growth rate of 6-6.5 per cent and raise its average income per capita to VND33.6 million this year, said Chairman Hien. — VNS
