Bac Lieu has more than 1,000 companies, but only 3 per cent of them are large enterprises, 20 per cent are medium enterprises, and the rest are micro businesses which are weak and vulnerable to economic downturn. But with the support of the provincial government, enterprises in the province still operate very well and contribute more to the provincial economic development towards industrialisation and modernisation. This is the remark by Mr Le Chi Ton, Director of Chi Ton Private Enterprise.

The active support of the government of Bac Lieu province has created momentum for vibrant development of local businesses. A typical example is Chi Ton Private Enterprise, the builder and investor of traffic, irrigation and civil engineering projects. In recent years, with the support of local authorities in the spirit of “Civil servants must do whatever is difficult and let easy works for enterprises do“, highlighted by the Provincial Party Committee’s Directive 13 which elaborates contents of the Politburo’s Resolution 09 on the roles of the private business model, enterprises have good foundations and motivations for development. As the government gives priority to agricultural development, the capital source for agriculture in Bac Lieu province is relatively abundant. This is an advantage for Chi Ton Private Enterprise to promote its strength of building irrigation works for agricultural production. The prestige of the company has been gradually built up through the success, quality and efficiency of its investment projects.

With its advantages in human resources and equipment for industrialisation and agricultural development, Chi Ton Private Enterprise has won bids for many major projects like the VND50 billion Nha Mat embankment (80 per cent completed), the VND30 billion Vinh My A shrimp farming zone, the VND30 billion Hoa Binh embankment, the VND120 billion Vinh Hung Market, and the VND30 billion Chau Hung – Hung Thanh Road. The firm has also carried out many JICA-funded projects like Vinh Phong irrigation work, Long Hai shrimp farm, and Long Dien shrimp farm. Director Le Chi Ton said, “In addition to the effects of the market economy, regulatory macroeconomic policies, and support of local governments, the factors in the sustainable development of a company are lawful operation, good relations with partners, well-established prestige on the market and far-sighted vision.” In the light of the above standpoint, Chi Ton Private Enterprise always tries its best to ensure the schedule, quality and efficiency of projects it undertakes. This is an advantage that Chi Ton Private Enterprise has over other rivals in the province.

With its effective business operations, Chi Ton Private Enterprise is not only a major contributor to the local budget but also an active participant in local social welfare activities. The company trains farmers to earn a better living within their real situation. It also raises relief funds for unfortunate people and grants financial support to poor students with excellent study records to help them continue their education. This is also a solid foundation for Chi Ton Private Enterprise to attain sustainable development in the current context of economic slowdown.
