On September 11, the 10th Regional Steering Committee Meeting of Mangroves for the Future Initiative (MFF) took place in Quang Nam province. Nearly 100 delegates representing 9 countries of the MFF from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Pakistan, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam participated in the meeting to discuss the issues related to raise resilience of coastal communities to climate change.

This is the first time Vietnam has hosted Regional Steering Committee Meeting of Mangroves for the Future Initiative since Vietnam was an official member in 2010. This event reflects international recognition towards Vietnam’s efforts in the management of coastal ecosystems.

MFF is a regional initiative to tackle the problem of climate change and coastal ecosystems conservation before impacts of the development process. Since 2007, through the National Coordinating Committee in each member state, the Initiative has funded localities to conduct activities to strengthen resilience of coastal communities who depend on the ecosystem. With 3,260 km of coastline, 3,000 islands and 2 off-shore archipelagos, Vietnamplays an important role in the protection of Asian coastal areas.

As a member of the MFF, in the last 3 years, the Executive Board has supported Vietnamto implement 15 projects of ecological restoration and coastal livelihoods improvement. These projects contribute to protecting resources of coastal areas, ensuring social security and ecological security with a total capital of more than US$ 1 million.
