(VOV) – Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera’s visit will help strengthen strategic partnership between Vietnam and Japan, especially between two defense ministries.

Vietnamese Defence Minister Phung Quang Thanh made the affirmation during talks with his Japanese counterpart Onodera in Hanoi on September 16.

He expressed his belief the visit will be a milestone in marking a broader and more intensive level of cooperation between the two ministries.

He urged Japan to provide equipment and technology to Vietnam to deal with unexploded ordnance (UXO) left over from the past war.

Minister Onodera noted that bilateral defence ties have developed well especially after the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on defence cooperation in 2011.

The two ministers discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern, the defence policies of each country and cooperative measures for the future.

They agreed to direct relevant agencies to put forward feasible measures to implement the signed memorandum of understanding, focusing on visit exchanges, personnel training, as well as maintaining and promoting defense policy and communications at the deputy ministerial and staff-officer levels.

During his stay in Vietnam, Minister Onodera is scheduled to visit the Commando Officer School under the Commando Arm and the Region 4 Naval Command.
