(CPV) -
The Prudence Foundation and Save the Children are implementing a USD197,000 project to support communities in the Mekong region to increase disaster preparedness for 3,500 vulnerable children and 14,000 community members.

As part of the project, the Prudence Foundation and Save the Children in cooperation with Tien Giang Department of Education and Training will present the disaster response equipment package worth VND490 million (equivalent to USD24,000) to communities and schools of three beneficiary districts of Go Cong Dong, Cai Lay and Cai Be. The package includes two inflatable swimming pools, 40 first aid kits, 500 floating school bags, 9 electricity generators, 41 hand-held and lecture loudspeakers, 180 water wings for school children and 7 risk maps.

Save the Children’s Country Director, Mr Gunnar Andersen, said: “With funding from the Prudence Foundation and good cooperation with local partners, the project is implemented on schedule and the project activities meet quality standards. Besides training the local residents, especially children, for disaster preparedness and self-protection skills, we provide essential equipment for local schools and communities to build on their capacity to effectively prepare for natural disasters. This will help communities and schools proactively reduce natural disaster risk.”

The “Disaster risk reduction in Vietnam” project, funded by the pan-Asian Prudence Foundation and in coordination with local government bodies (such as the Department of Education and Training, provincial, district and communal Centres for Flood and Storm Control, People’s Committees, etc.), has been implemented in selected disaster-prone areas of Tien Giang and Dong Thap provinces by Save the Children.

The project focuses mainly on raising awareness of disaster risk reduction and the possible negative impacts of climate change on communities and schools in Mekong region; and strengthening children and their communities’ capacity in disaster preparedness through providing equipment and small-scale facilities to reduce disaster risk./.
