Rescue workers struggled to reach ravaged towns and villages in the central Philippines as they tried to deliver aid to survivors of a powerful typhoon that killed an estimated 10,000 people and displaced nearly 620,000 people. About 9.5 million people were effected across nine regions, the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a statement.

The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon offered his condolences and said UN humanitarian agencies were working closely with the Philippines government to respond rapidly with emergency assistance.

On November 10, New Zealand and Australia donated an immediate USD490,000 towards relief efforts in the typhoon-ravaged Philippines, and said additional support could follow.

In Vietnam, preparations for the typhoon were under way. About 600,000 people from the central region who had been evacuated returned home because the storm changed course and was instead heading for the northern coast, where authorities began evacuating nearly 100,000 in three northern provinces./.
