(VEN) – Over recent years, Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem) has broadly applied the occupational health and safety management systems across the whole sector to minimize negative impacts on worker safety.

As the sector can easily cause environmental pollution, the risks of occupational accidents and diseases are quite high, while implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) procedures can be quite complicated.
Over the past years, Vicem’s member units in many provinces and cities have always complied with the state’s rules on OSH seriously, fully and timely.
One of the corporation’s success was the wide application of the OSH management system in all of its member companies. Accordingly, to inspect and assess environmental impacts of some major companies such as Vicem Hoang Thach Cement One Member Co Ltd, Hoang Mai and But Son cement companies, the corporation has applied the ISO 14000 management system. In other cases, to carry out the verification and inspection works on products’ quality and to assess the quality of specific products risking health and safety problems, the corporation has developed and effectively applied quality management systems according to the ISO 9001 – 2008 and the environmental management system ISO 14001 – 2010, as well as built up a process to handle problems in production following the ISO 14001 – 2010, ISO 90001 – 2008 applied to all the member units.
As for those units posing high risks such as petrol depots, explosives magazines, paper warehouses and power stations, apart from the application of OSH management system, the corporation also regularly reviewed, equipped and tested facilities, medical and fire protection equipment, especially in the member companies. At the same time, every year it directs the member units to inspect on their own and ensure safety for themselves, organize occupational safety drills, establish labor protection councils and set up OSH inspection teams in the member units.
Thanks to close instructions and the wide application of OSH management system, last year Vicem’s member units well implemented occupational safety operations and one typical example was Vicem Hoang Thach Cement One Member Co Ltd.
The company has three cement production lines with total capacity of 3.5 million tonnes of clinker per year. It also produces and trades fire-resistant products and cement packages, builds and installs industrial and civil ovens. In nine consecutive years (2003-2012), thanks to successful application of the OSH and the world’s advanced technologies, Vicem Hoang Thach Cement One Member Co Ltd did not let any serious labor accidents happen that could affected the workforce or production efficiency.
At present, Vicem Hoang Thach has also set up a Labor Protection Council chaired by its general director and the Safety-Environment Department consults and help the director in OSH management and environmental protection according to the ISO 14001:2010.
Apart from Vicem Hoang Thach, many of Vicem’s member units have been promoting applications of OSH technical measures to prevent and remove risks of worker unsafety and environmental impacts./.
