A mother and son in Ha Tinh Province are in desperate need of help to overcome their illnesses and their desperate situation.
Nguyet is bed-bounded The two mother and son live alone in a sagging house that cannot keep out the winter cold. The 60-year-old mother, Nguyen Thi Nguyet, was diagnosed with diabetes and a brain hemorrhage five years ago and she now has to depend on her son for all daily activities.
Hoang Phi Ho only graduated the first grade and now has to do odd jobs for money. His income can reach VND1 million in a month if he is working constantly.
“Because of our situation, he doesn’t dare to think about love or marriage,” Nguyet said.
The sagging house When Nguyet met Ho’s father their parents were opposed to the the marriage because Ho’s father had divorced once before. After being rejected, they lived with each other in a small market, hoping to be hired to earn money. Ho’s father died when he was 12 years old, leaving behind a huge burden to the small family. Nguyet’s health started to deteriorate, so she was unable to do hard labour. Ho often wandered through the market brought back only tens of thousands of VND.
Misfortune continued when local authorities planned to rebuild the market in 2010. Nguyet is now bed-bound because of diabetes and and her other health problems. Nguyet said, “I’m old so I don’t care but he’s still young. He was unable to go to school and now our situation prevents him from getting married. I just hope he can get a stable job before I die.”
The house provides no warmth “I do hope to get some type of job to help my mom and a wife to start over again. I’m worried about my mom whenever I have to go to work far from home,” Ho said. Nguyen Dinh Son, Chairman of Nghen Town People’s Committee said, “Because they don’t have a home we allow them stay there temporarily, even after the market was taken down. But it’s not a good solution for the long term.”
