BA RIA-VUNG TAU (VNS)— Eleven Indonesian pirates, detained by Vietnamese marine police last year, will be extradited to Indonesia tomorrow (April 13), Vietnamese marine authorities announced today (April 12).

Malaysia-registered tanker Zafirah, which lost communication on November 19 last year, were intercepted by Vietnamese marine police on November 22 when it was located at approximately 40 nautical miles southeast of Vung Tau. Police arrested 11 pirates on board.

The tanker’s nine crew members, comprising five Myanmar nationals and four Indonesians, who had been forced to leave the vessel in a life raft, were rescued on November 21 by Vietnamese fishermen.

They were transferred to Viet Nam Marine Rescue Coordinating Centre on the same day.

Further investigations found three other people involved in the pirate attack, including two Indonesians, police said. —VNS
