With nearly one million Muong ethnic minority people living mainly in Hoa Binh, Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, Son La, Thanh Hoa provinces and a part of Hanoi, during Tet, they maintain the unique sac bua singing, a kind of singing to welcome the New Year. Accordingly, during the first and second day of a New Year, Muong ethnic minority people often gather in queue, playing gongs and singing. When passing houses, the owners of the houses often open the doors and give children in the delegation some lucky money or some cakes.

During Tet, when going out, Muong ethnic minority people choose their most beautiful dress to wear. Muong ethnic minority women in Hoa Binh province wear black skirts with short white shirts, the large upper hem of the skirts decorated by graceful flower weaving. A part of the hem is covered by the white shirts, with flower weaving brassiere worn coming out from the inside of the shirts. In addition, white towels adorn their heads.

Meanwhile, Muong ethnic minority women in Thanh Hoa province often wear flowered dark towels, with colourful shirts, mainly light green and light yellow, while the hem of the skirts is often rolled outside the shirts.

With a population of nearly one million people, Nung ethnic minority people have their special customs during Tet. One of these is presenting an emasculated cock to parents-in-law to worship ancestors. The cock must be raised several months before Tet by feeding rice.

To prepare for Tet, from December 28 of the lunar calendar, Nung ethnic minority people stop working to tidy up their houses, clean their agricultural tools, stick red paper to worship the soul of working materials, and hang Tet parallel sentences written in their language. On the night of December 30 on the lunar calendar, people return to their own houses to welcome the New Year Eve. On the morning of the first day of the New Year, people give lucky money to their family members and surrounding children.

During Tet, they play traditional games, including kicking a shuttle cock, singing, traditional boxing, or dragon dance.

Thai ethnic minority people’s black sticky rice cake during Tet

There are over one million Thai ethnic minority people in Vietnam, living mainly in Lai Chau, Son La, Hoa Binh and Nghe An provinces. In many regions, the market on December 25 of the lunar calendar is the biggest in the year, before people stop working to prepare for Tet. After that, people tidy up their houses and start to make sticky rice cakes in the evening of December 29 of the lunar calendar.

Thai ethnic minority people often make two kinds of sticky rice cakes, the black and the white. To make black cakes, they burn rice straw, getting ash to combine with sticky rice to make cake.

On the final day of the year, they boil cakes and pork. They organise a year-end dinner with the presence of all family members, sometimes friends and relatives. On the altar, incense burns continuously.

On the first day of the New Year, Thai ethnic minority women take sticky rice cake boiling water for their relatives to drink. After that, they bring steamed sticky rice to worship their house soul, then arrange the food in three trays to worship the husband’s and wife’s ancestors. On the first day of a New Year, women are allowed to eat food first and men eat later.
