On the very first days of Giap Ngo Lunar New Year, since dawn when the very first mist is lingering everywhere, people in the region have called on each other to converge at Thi Thung Mound, on the asphalt and concrete inter-communeroad connecting DT641 to Dong Xuan district, from the starting point of Cay Cam Bridge, groups of motorcycles bring those inhabitants from adjacent communes to An Xuan commune, now and then there are even tourist cars carrying spectators to experience the horse race.
This year horse race has the participation of 32 “jockeys” from 6 teams of the communes of An Hiep, An Tho, An Linh, An Cu, An Xuan (Tuy An district)-the host commune and Dong Hoa district (guest team). Thi Thung Mound horse race is one of the very particular festivals in Phu Yen and the central south coastal region. Each race stage has 4 competing horses (8 turns for eliminating) to choose the fastest horse to enter the semi-final round. The result is the horse numbered 4 and jockey Le Van Thi from An Hiep commune won the first prize persuasively. This is the second consecutively that Le Van Thu and his horse has won the championship at Thi Thung Mound traditional horse race. The horse numbered 17 and jockey Thai Van Sau (Dong Hoa district) came second; the two horses numbered 20,21 and the two jockeys Le Kim Tinh and Le Thanh Trung (host team of An Xuan) won the third prizes.
Vice chairman of Tuy An district’s people’s committee, Mr. Pham Ngoc Thanh, lets known, “Thi Thung Mound traditional horse race is the provincial scope festival, one of the 4 major festivals of the district. As for scope and quality, the festival this year has been improved much and the horse quality is also comparatively equal; the task of security and order is good, logistics is ensured; there are also more audience to the festival”.
