(CPV) - Rice exports in 2013 reached 6.68 million tonnes (worth nearly USD2.9 billion), down over 1 million tonnes against the previous year, according to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA). For this, it is urgent to find directions to make Vietnam’s rice exports more prosperous in 2014.
VFA’s report on the country’s rice export situation showed that Vietnam’s rice met difficulties in the world market because orders from Southeast Asian traditional markets in the second half of the year were suspended. Domestic traders did not receive any order from Indonesia, while rice shipment to the Philippines and Malaysia decreased sharply. In addition, Thailand’s rice inventories were about 5 million tonnes in 2013, while the inventory level of India was much higher than that.
Some experts and domestic rice traders said that the State needs to research suitable polities to create favourable conditions for exports with small volume, helping farmers to consume rice in stock when the world rice prices fall sharply.
Furthermore, Vietnam needs to build a specific rice trademark and focus on the quality of rice. VFA said that it will study the selection of Jasmine 85 rice variety to serve high-quality rice exports in 2014. It has proposed relevant agencies to encourage farmers to reduce production area of low-quality rice IR50404 to 5 percent of the total area, down from 10-15 percent the previous year.
In 2014, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will direct localities to limit the area of low-quality rice, especially in the summer-autumn crop with about 5 percent of the planning area, because production of the rice is priced high but the quality is low. The ministry will encourage domestic businesses to build rice material areas to have production chains, helping increase rice value.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade is promoting trade to access new markets, opening more opportunities for Vietnam’s rice exports in 2014./.
