Hundreds of workers strike for non-payment

Nearly 400 workers from a South Korean company in Binh Phuoc Province accused the firm of not paying their salaries for three months.

World Tec Vina Ltd. Company, located in Chon Thanh Industrial Park, specialises in the manufacture and assembly of electronic components. According to Nguyen Quoc Nam, the company’s employee base is around 400 workers. In August of last year the company suddenly informed all labourers that it would cease all contracts because of financial difficulties. Workers were requested to send in their resignations, leaving them with no means of income or unemployment benefits.

Another worker said, “There were notices pasted up all over the place during the last three months promising to pay workers in December, but we haven’t seen any money.” The company then said they would pay their employees in January, which was later deferred to February 20. When this promise also was not fulfilled, around 300 workers gathered outside of the company on February 24 to demand payment. They were disappointed to learn that their complaints fell on deaf ears, as the director of the company left to South Korea.

During the three-month period, workers said that they have had to live under very difficult conditions, literally left out in the cold, as their contracts afforded housing. Many have yet to find new employment.

Nguyen Van Sang, Trade Union Chairman of Binh Phuoc Province’s industrial park management board, said he worked with the company’s managers. At present, only 60 workers have been retained. The director has been unavailable to comment on the situation.

Sang said, “We plan to negotiate with the director on March 1, upon his return to the country and hope that he conforms to Vietnamese labour laws.”
