Nhan Dan – Rach Gia city in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang has been recognised as a ‘second-class city’, pursuant to Decision No.268/QĐ-TTg signed by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on February 18.


Rach Gia, a coastal city in the Mekong Delta region, is an administrative and economic centre as well as an important traffic hub for Kien Giang province. The city is about 250 kilometres from Ho Chi Minh City, 116 kilometres from Can Tho city and 95 kilometres from the Ha Tien international border gate.


Rach Gia town was recognised as a ‘third-class urban area’ in 2004 and then became Rach Gia city in 2005. The average income per capita is now VND44.6 million (roughly US$2,000) per year and the percentage of non-agricultural labour in the inner city reaches over 85%.


Rach Gia is considered as one of four major cities in the Mekong Delta region, including Can Tho, Ca Mau and Long Xuyen, which have strategic significance to the regional economic development.
