State President Truong Tan Sang has given a certificate of bravery awarded by HCM City to Ngo Van Hong of Long An Province and Tran Van Co of Tien Giang Province.
The two men helped save the lives of 50 people who were forced to jump out of a hydrofoil on Sai Gon River last month after it burst into flames. Earlier, the chairman of the city administration, Le Hoang Quan, gave the two men VND10 million ($490) each.

Da Nang tourism numbers up during Tet
Da Nang received more than 179,000 visitors during Tet (Lunar New Year), a surge of 22.4 per cent over the corresponding period last year. Of this figure, more than 58,000 tourists were foreigners, a rise of 23 per cent compared to the same period last year, according to the city’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Firm to increase red dragonfruit exports
The Hugo Import, Export and Trade Ltd Company plans to export 500 tonnes of red dragonfruit to the US by sea and air this year, an increase of 150 tonnes compared to last year. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Plant Protection Department, Viet Nam exported 1,200 tonnes of dragonfruit to the US last year.

Thousands visit General Giap’s home province
Thousands of people flocked to Vung Chua in Quang Dong Commune, Quang Trach District in Quang Binh Province to pay tribute to the late General Vo Nguyen Giap during Tet (Lunar New Year). Local authorities said that in the first days of the Lunar New Year, nearly 4,000 people came to the grave to burn incense and present flowers.

Nearly 20,000 babies born during Tet
According to the Ministry of Health, nearly 20,000 babies were born during Tet (Lunar New Year), from January 29 to February 4. Heads of hospitals presented gifts and lucky money to those babies born on Lunar New Year’s Eve. There are 1.1-1.3 million births every year, the ministry said.
