Meanwhile, the Central Highlands and neighboring provinces in the south such as Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan may have to endure the drought until late May or early June when the rainy season is expected to begin by that time, which is later than normal, according to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting

Rainfall in those areas will be much lower than in previous years and will not increase until August, said the center, which stated that rainfall in March and April in the central region is lower than the average level of recent years.

From March to early May, the water level in most of the rivers in the central region and Central Highlands will decrease continuously and be lower than the average in many years by around 20-40% and up to 50% at some sections, the center predicted.

From May to August, the water level on rivers from Nghe An Province to Ninh Thuan Province also falls and may be 20-40% lower than the average of recent years.

The center said those areas should prepare for the drought and water shortage this year. Yet it said the situation will not be severe like last year.
