Nhan Dan Online – Japan has planned to provide JPY200 billion (US$1.95 billion) in official development assistance (ODA) loans for a number of infrastructure projects in Vietnam in the 2013 fiscal year, the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) announced on March 6.
The two sides inked a JPY25 billion (US$243.5 million) loan agreement today in Tokyo to finance the Economic Management and Competitive Credit programme for Viet Nam (EMCC 2) and the country’s Support Programme to Respond to Climate Change (fourth phase).
From December 2013 to February 2014, bilateral loan agreements totalling JPY55 billion (US$535.7 million) were also signed for Vietnam’s three projects, namely the Da Nhim hydropower plant expansion and the construction of Hanoi’s belt road 3′s Mai Dich – Nam Thang Long section flyover and the passenger terminal T2 of Noi Bai International Airport (third phase).
The remainder of the JPY200 billion loan package will be provided by the end of this month.
According to JICA Chief Representative in Vietnam, Mutsuya Mori, Japan has remained the largest ODA provider to Vietnam during the past 20 years, accounting for 30% of the total by donors. In 2012 and 2013, Japan also ranked first in the number of underway-foreign direct investment (FDI) projects in Vietnam.
