At a meeting on the avian influenza with hospitals and the Preventive Medicine Center on Wednesday, the department’s Deputy Director Nguyen Huu Hung asked districts to report the flu prevention activities. He added that the risks of A/H5N1 and H7N9 on humans were high.
“With A/H5N1, HCMC is surrounded by neighboring provinces where bird flu has occurred,” he said.
According to Hung, HCMC has prepared 5,000 Tamiflu tablets for this year. In case the more deadly A/H7N9 flu infections are detected in humans, districts have to set up quarantine zones. Besides, districts should have preparations by now.
The HCMC Preventive Medicine Center has reported one person infected with A/H1N1 in Phu Nhuan District who is being treated at Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital.
Regarding measles, there have been nearly 250 people catching the disease in HCMC in the year to date compared to 242 cases in last year’s same period, said director of the HCMC Preventive Medicine Center Nguyen Tri Dung.
Therefore, the Ministry of Health has allowed HCMC to extend the age range, areas and time of measles vaccination. The final vaccination phase will take place this weekend citywide for children aged two and three at kindergartens besides healthcare centers of communes and wards.
The vaccination schedule will be on Fridays and Saturdays in two months.
According to Dung, ten people at Le Quy Don High School in HCMC’s District 3 contracted chickenpox late last month after the first case had been reported in mid-February.
The Preventive Medicine Center has disinfected the entire school and educated parents about how to prevent the disease. No new chickenpox case was reported as of Tuesday.
Chickenpox vaccines are now out of stock. The Drug Administration has worked with the importer to import more vaccines.
In the meantime, the best way to prevent not only chickenpox but also other infectious diseases is to ensure hygiene.
There have been 214 chickenpox cases reported since the year’s beginning, 138 cases higher than last year’s same period.
