The Ministry of Information and Communications on February 26, 2014 withdrew the license for the old edition of Sai Gon Tiep Thi at the request of the Investment and Trade Promotion Center of HCMC, the city government’s administering agency of the newspaper. The license withdrawal decision makes clear: “The administering agency requested stopping the operation of the newspaper over financial distress.” That explains why Saigon Times Group is tasked with continuing publication of Sai Gon Tiep Thi, instead of letting it stop over its financial constraints.
On the same day the ministry issued a new license allowing Saigon Times Group to assume the job of continuing publishing Sai Gon Tiep Thi. Two days later, the government of HCMC handed this license to the Group.
Sai Gon Tiep Thi brand has been associated with the high-quality Vietnamese goods program in which consumer polls are laboriously conducted and trade fairs are organized as great venues for consumers to shop. The paper has also left a good impression on readers through distinct articles about nuances of life, people’s profiles and cultural diversity.
The Group publishes the new Sai Gon Tiep Thi thrice a week – Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and continues using the long-established masthead and size of the paper. The paper’s editorial office is located at the Saigon Times headquarters, 35 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street, District 1, HCMC.
Given that the global print media has entered into one of its most difficult periods with a slew of newspapers with long history shut down, publishing a paper three times a week in the current market conditions is a great challenge in terms of both financial and human resource issues. However, with a sense of responsibility before readers, Saigon Times Group is making efforts to ensure the continued publication of Sai Gon Tiep Thi.
With the new publishing license granted by the ministry last week, the new administering agency of Sai Gon Tiep Thi is the HCMC Department of Industry and Trade.
The editor-in-chief of Saigon Times Group, Tran Thi Ngoc Hue, said the paper’s new edition will be continuing the job which the team of the old edition had done over the past 19 years.
“The goals and missions of Sai Gon Tiep Thi’s new edition are to serve consumers, goods producers and services suppliers,” she said. “At a time when news readers are overwhelmed with so much information, they truly need information that is objective, accurate, timely and helpful.”
Nineteen years ago, Sai Gon Tiep Thi produced its first issue on April 15, 1995 and belonged to the Exhibition Information Center of the now-defunct HCMC Department of Culture and Information. More than a year later, it was transferred to Saigon Times Group on June 14, 1996. But on February 12, 2004, it was separated from the Group and became a media arm of the HCMC Investment and Trade Promotion Center.
Now the paper is reunited with Saigon Times Group. Editor-in-Chief Tran Thi Ngoc Hue said she appreciates all contributions by those who have written and will write for Sai Gon Tiep Thi. “We look forward to continuing receiving the great support of readers, advertisers and enterprises.”
Saigon Times Group is a news media organization with six publications – economic magazine Thoi Bao Kinh Te Saigon, online newspaper Thoi Bao Kinh Te Saigon Online, ICT magazine Thoi Bao Vi Tinh Saigon, English-language The Saigon Times Daily and The Saigon Times Weekly, and Sai Gon Tiep Thi.
