Students’ bodies found in sand dunes

The bodies of five students were found buried in a sand dune in the central highlands province of Dak Lak.

The bodies were found by a local named Y Hat Eban on March 13. He was checking on his fishnet when he saw a pair of trousers and four pairs of slippers. By the stream, a decaying arm was sticking out of the sand so he made report to the local authorities.


The authorities of Krong Bong District discovered five decaying bodies under the sand. The bodies were later identified as five students from 7th to 12th grade at Cu Dram Secondary School and Tran Hung Dao High School.


Two bodies were found sitting and three bodies was lying with their arms pointing up and sand in the mouths and lungs. According to the initial investigation, the five students might have gone into a sand cave by the stream and been buried when the cave collapsed.

According to Tran Quoc, head of the Department of Education and Training in Krong Bong District, all five students were from H’mong ethnic minority group. They lived alone or rented rooms to study in Cu Dram Commune. They had not attended class for three consecutive days and the school had just reported them as missing.


Mai Thi Nga, the mother of one of the students, said, “My family is poor so we put up a shack near school for him. Last we saw of him, he was going to school three days ago. We thought that he was at school.” Another parent was also shocked at the news, and said he thought his son was too busy studying to come home.


Authorities of Krong Bong District supported each family with VND2 million (USD95) for funeral costs. The police are still investigating the case.
