(VOV) -The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) has forecast Vietnamese bivalve mollusk exports to Russia will increase significantly in the second quarter of the year.

However, Vietnam will still face stiff price competition if the country wants to massively expand exports and penetrate deeper into the Russian market, VASEP cautions.

Three year ago, squid and octopus exports to Russia unexpectedly dropped over the span of a few months. However, in June 2013, the market began to rebound and exports ever since have steadily edged up, experiencing an exponential growth rate of 966% over the prior year.

According to leading seafood exporters, the positive trend is attributable to significant reductions in prices compared to previous years.

In 2013, Vietnam was the second biggest frozen squid supplier for Russia after China while the country has been the biggest frozen octopus exporter.

Vietnamese bivalve mollusk enterprises also surpassed huge rivals including Portugal, China, Spain, Tunisia, Thailand , India, and Indonesia to win almost market share of Russia.
