The ongoing second phase of a programme to build flood-proof residential areas in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta has been remarkably successful with damages caused by floods reducing significantly, according to the Ministry of Construction.
In the second phase, in progress since 2008, the delta has been building 122 flood-proof residential areas and 47 dykes. More than 64 per cent of households targeted under the programme have been moved to the flood-proof residential areas.

HCM City to check trucks for overloading
The HCM City Department of Transport and ports will inspect the weight of trucks at ports and warehouses at the end of this month.
This year the police and transport inspectors have discovered 1,192 violations by trucks that were overloaded or used oversized cargo containers.

Land-use certificates deadline looms
Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has called on provinces and cities to complete by 2014-15 issue of land-use-rights certificates in areas where cadastral maps are complete.
As of the end of last year the country had issued 41.6 million certificates for land use and ownership of house and other properties associated with land involving a total area of 22.9 million hectares, or 94.8 per cent of the total area to be issued land-use certificates.

City suburban abattoirs behind schedule
Construction of slaughterhouses in HCM City’s outlying districts, including Cu Chi and Hoc Mon, is making slow progress because of lengthy formalities and lack of funds, the city Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said on Wednesday.
They are now expected to be finished by the end of next year.
The city also plans to relocate 23 slaughter houses operating in residential areas.

Lam Dong approves chrysanthemum centre
The Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) province of Lam Dong has approved the setting up of a modern chrysanthemum breeding centre in Don Duong District.
The 3ha centre, to be built by Agrivina Ltd. and Floritec, a Dutch company that breeds and distributes cutflower chrysanthemum and potted plants, at a cost of 1.5 million euros (US$2.1 million), will produce 5 million seedlings a year.
Chrysanthemum varieties are produced in Da Lat using tissue culture.
