HA NOI (VNS) — National Assembly (NA) deputies have objected to China’s illegal positioning of a drilling rig in Viet Nam’s exclusive economic zone.
At their meeting on Wednesday, they demanded China immediately withdraw its rig from Viet Nam’s waters.
Deputies declared that China’s placement of the Haiyang Shiyou-981 drilling rig within Viet Nam’s continental shelf and exclusive economic zone seriously violated Viet Nam’s sovereignty, sovereign right and jurisdiction, infringed international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea.
They added that China’s act ran counter to agreements reached by the two Parties and States. They said it also threatened peace and security in the region.
The lawmakers thanked people and organisaitons around the world for their support of Viet Nam.
Delegates approved the Party and State’s guidelines for safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and territory on the basis of international law and in maintaining a peaceful and stable environment for national development.
They also praised efforts to preserve the traditional friendship between the people of the two nations. — VNS
