The robot creation movement has lured the participation of many students with a lot of unique ideas.
Over the past years, the movement of scientific creation and research of Sao Do University’s students has seen a strong development; especially, the robot creation movement has lured the participation of many students with a lot of unique ideas.
Passion for creation
These days, the robot practice room of Sao Do University (Ministry of Industry) has always been animated by demo practice exercises in preparation for the final of the 2014 Robocon to take place in Khanh Hoa early this May.
The room was sometimes oppressively silent but sometimes filled with a burst of emotion when students successfully controlled automatic robots.
Seeing the robots skillfully practise the movements of such games as swing, seesaw, pole walk, and jungle gym, we could not help admiring the creative ideas of the university’s teachers and students.
Teacher Nguyen Cong Dat, Dean of the Automotive Engineering Faculty, is the direct instructor of the teams involved in robot creation.
To bring into play the creativity of students, Sao Do University has organized robot creation contests for them since 2012, teacher Dat said.
The competitions aimed to find ideas and those with a talent for robot making to participate in national Robocon contests. The university had one team entering the finals in 2012 and five teams in 2013. This year, it continues to have one team qualified for the final round of the 2014 Robocon.
First year student Pham Van Hong is enamored of scientific creation. Shortly after passing the university entrance exam, he boldly registered to take part in the qualifier of a robot creation contest held by the university and was listed in the lineup to attend the 2014 national Robocon competition.
“When I was a pupil, I myself studied many devices, created and installed a number of robots, such as “floor-sweeping robot”, “dish-washing robot”, etc.; however, the products were imperfect due to the lack of orientation as well as equipment,” shared Hong.
“Joining the university’s team to compete in the national Robocon contest is my happiness. Through the competition, I will have more opportunities for learning, research, and creation to satisfy my passion for science.”
Tran Van Thanh, a student of the Automotive Engineering Faculty, has taken part in Robocon creation contests for three years.
Thanh has already liked studying, self-dismantling, and reinstalling discarded utensils and toys and finding out their operating principles since he was still a senior high school pupil.
Entering Sao Do University, Thanh often goes to the practice room to research on devices to satisfy his passion. With chances to participate in the teams attending the national Robocon contests in three consecutive years (2012 – 2014), he has gained even more practical experiences in robot creation.
Lighting students’ fire
Sao Do University annually organizes scientific research registration and scientific seminars for students to have opportunities to bring into play their ability and passion for creation. The university also pays attention to investment in machines and equipment.
The students with scientific topics winning prizes at faculty or university level are entitled to enjoy the priority of getting additional points for the graduation exam or being exempted from the exam if the topics are of specialized subjects.
Apart from exam exemption and point addition, the university also holds ceremonies to commend and reward the students whose solutions, inventions are applied in teaching.
Each year, 40 – 50 topics, technical solutions and inventions of the university’s students are accepted, of which many useful topics and solutions have been applied in teaching.
In addition, the university has set up such clubs as technique club, robot club, tradition club, business-starting club, etc., thereby creating an intellectual and helpful playground for students to satisfy their passion.
“The Robocon creation contest is an intellectual playground for students. It not only encourages students’ creative and group learning spirit but also arouse their passion for science,” said teacher Vu Quang Thap, Vice Rector of Sao Do University.
For further development of the scientific research movement in general and robot creation in particular, Sao Do University in the coming time will continue to provide resource assistance and create favorable conditions for students to develop interesting topics of great practical value to apply in life and production.
