From now until 2020, the southern province of Kien Giang will continue to invest in socio-economic development for ethnic minority groups. This effort is to be combined with increased implementation of the program to build new style rural areas and poverty reduction, assisting them to lead more prosperous lives and reducing hardship in extremely disadvantaged regions.
The province also plans to establish economic and cultural centres in ethnic minority regions, involving highly qualified ethnic minority officials, in order to improve people’s knowledge.
In all areas that are inhabited densely by ethnic minority people, Kien Giang province also strives to build firm schools, tenement houses for teachers and dormitories for ethnic minority pupils. Meanwhile, it is taking action to reduce the poverty rate by 2% per year, and provide adequate housing to over 70% of ethnic minority families.
To comply with the Prime Minister’s direction on realising policies for poor ethnic minority people, in the 2013-2015 period, the province is providing residential land and employment for 2,740 ethnic minority families, with a total capital of over VND41 billion.
According to Vietnam News Agency, since 2006, the province has invested VND580 billion to build 14,000 houses, given residential land support to 2,699 families and production land to 2,220 families, and created jobs for 10,810 people. Therefore, the poverty rate among ethnic minority people has been reduced by 2.5% per year, with 96% of ethnic minority families having access to electricity, 76% of families using safe water, and 93% of ethnic minority pupils aged 6-14 attending school./.
