Traffic accidents kill 36 during 2 national holidays in Vietnam

Sixty-eight traffic accidents occurred nationwide, leaving 36 people dead and 37 others injured during the Reunification Day (April 30) and International Labor Day (May 1), Vietnam’s National Traffic Safety Committee reported.

On April 30, 32 accidents took place across the country, killing 14 people and injuring 20 people.


During the following day, the number of accidents was higher, 36, leaving 22 people dead and 17 others injured. Of these accidents, one happened on a railway route, killing a person.


During the two national holidays, traffic police handled nearly 23,700 cases of traffic violations nationwide, issued fines totaling VND13.7 billion (US$650,000), and impounded 48 cars, 2,100 motorbikes, and many other means of transport, the committee said.


Jan-April traffic deaths down by 13.42%


In the first four months of this year, 8,638 traffic accidents occurred in Vietnam, claiming the lives of 3,173 people and injuring 8,512 others, the committee reported.


Compared to the same period last year, the number of crashes decreased by 13.42 percent, the death toll fell by 4.8 percent, and the injured dropped by 16.16 percent.


In April alone, 2,056 traffic accidents occurred, killing 746 people, and wounding 2,050 others.


These figures are lower by 13 percent, 5.6 percent and 12.2 percent than those in the same month last year, according to statistics by the committee.


Over the past four months, traffic police have handled nearly 1.4 million road accidents, imposed fines totaling VND803 billion ($38.1 million), penalized 8,700 cars and more than 157,000 motorbikes, and revoked 110,693 driver’s licenses.


Meanwhile, waterway traffic police levied fines worth VND44.6 billion ($2.1 million) on 84,665 violations nationwide, according to the committee.
