Tens of thousands of Vietnamese people Sunday demonstrated peacefully across Vietnam’s major cities in protest against China’s deployment of a giant oil rig escorted by a fleet of military and armed ships in the Paracel Islands, which Vietnam calls Hoang Sa and claims sovereignty over.

Demonstrators, who are people from all walks of life, marched across downtown Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang while waving Vietnamese flags and banners saying “China, take your drilling rig 981 out of Vietnamese waters,” and “Paracel and Spratly islands belong to Vietnam.” They also sang patriotic songs and shouted “Down with China’s invasion!”
