Appellate trial begins on largest drug trafficking ring

(VOV) -The Supreme People’s Court opened an appellate trial in northern Quang Ninh province, on June 16, to deal with the largest-ever drug trafficking ring in Vietnam (about 5,000 cakes of heroin).



The case involved in Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, born in 1960 in northern Bac Giang province, and dozens of other defendants.

In January’s instance trial, the Quang Ninh provincial People’s Court sentenced 30 drug traffickers to the death penalty, 13 defendants to life imprisonment and many others received up to 20 years in jail.



Among the 89 defendants in the instance trial, forty appealed for a reduction in their verdicts, one requested a review of his charges, and one continued to plead his innocence.


More than 25 lawyers are involved in the ongoing appeals, which will last until June 20.
