(VOVworld) – China’s illegal placement of its Haiyang 981 oil rig in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf poses a threat to peace, said an Argentine geopolitical expert.

In a radio program on international affairs broadcast by Equilibrium Global yesterday, Alberto Hutschenreuter, a professor at the Air War College of the Argentine Air Force, expressed his concern about China’s refusal to abide by decisions made by international organizations about settling disputes, while whipping up nationalism and accelerating the arms race.

His concern was shared by Diego Velazquez, Social Media Manager of Equilibrium Global. Velazquez said China’s deployment of a drilling rig and a large escort that includes military ships in Vietnamese waters is an action that challenges Vietnam’s sovereignty and threatens peace and stability in the region.

Vanina Soledad Fattori, Equilibrium Global’s Coordinator of Contents, who is also a commentator for the Argentine world affairs website “United Explanation,” pointed out that Beijing’s actions in the East Sea violate both the 1982 United Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea that China signed with ASEAN countries in 2002. She noted that international opinion worldwide supports Vietnam’s stance of settling disputes through peaceful measures in conformity with international law.
