Pano feedDutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has said that he agrees with the May 10 Statement of ASEAN Foreign Ministers, insisting that all parties in the East Vietnam Sea should restrain themselves and solve disputes by peaceful means in line with international law.
The Dutch premier made the statement at a meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung on Monday, the first day of his two-day visit to Vietnam at the invitation of PM Dung.
During the meeting, PM Dung informed his guest of China’s illegal placement of oil rig Haiyang Shiyou-981 within Vietnam’s continental shelf and exclusive economic zone.
By placing the rig there, China has seriously violated international law, the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Vietnam Sea (DOC) to which China is a signatory, the Vietnamese premier said.
He emphasized that this act has directly threatened peace, stability, air and maritime security, safety and freedom in the sea.
In reply, the Dutch PM expressed his deep concern about the current situation, confirming that the Netherlands shares the same view with that in the May 8 EU Declaration and May 10 Statement of ASEAN Foreign Ministers.
The view is that all concerned parties in the East Vietnam Sea should exercise restraint and solve disputes by peaceful measures based on international law.
The host and guest also discussed many other issues in the bilateral relations of the two countries.
The two PMs agreed that Vietnam and the Netherlands will establish a strategic partnership on sustainable agriculture and food security and expand cooperation in culture, defense, science, technology, education, and training.
Dutch PM Rutte pledged to facilitate the “Vietnam Days in the Netherlands” event slated for this year.
The Netherlands supports Vietnam in enhancing its comprehensive ties with the EU, and will encourage the European Commission to soon ratify a framework agreement on partnership and comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam and recognize Vietnam as a full market economy when negotiations for the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement are concluded, the Dutch PM said.
After the talks, the host and guest witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in developing the Son My liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminal in Vietnam and a contract on LNG purchasing for the Thi Vai terminal between the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Corporation and the Netherlands’ Shell Group.
