Vietnam’s positive contributions to human rights

(VOV) – Vietnam reiterated its consistent policy of protecting and promoting human rights at the 26th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, Switzerland from June 11-13.


The session discussed issues related to civil rights, politics, economics, culture, social affairs and development.


The session included a meeting on safety of journalists and three dialogues with 10 rapporteurs and special UN experts on human rights issues of the international community’s concern such as right to health, right to food, poverty reduction, anti human trafficking, elimination of violence against women, corporate responsibility for human rights.

Speaking at the session, the Vietnamese delegation highlighted the progress Vietnam has made in building legal institutions and implementing policies and strategies relating to the rights of the people, especially social groups in need of protection such as women, children and victims of human trafficking.


The delegation also reaffirmed its determination to fully and properly implement its voluntary commitments as a UNHCR member and proposed solutions for protecting and promoting human rights, especially the rights specifically discussed at this Council session.


Ambassador Pham Quoc Tru stressed that governments, businesses, UN organizations and all other relevant parities should strengthen cooperation to mitigate the negative impact of globalization on human rights, create favourable conditions for FDI flows, protect legitimate corporate interests, pay due attention to protecting and implementing the rights of workers, harmonize the interests of businesses, employees and other concerned parities.


Tru suggested the UN and other international organizations identify priorities in the future and specific measures to effectively eliminate violence against women and reduce poverty. He also asked developed countries and international organizations to enhance cooperation and support for developing countries in this regard.


“Vietnam acknowledged the efforts of special rapporteurs, UN mechanisms and the international community in building and promoting approach based on human rights to cope with human trafficking. Vietnam also wants other countries to pay more attention to building anti-trafficking measures in each community, including enhancing the role of information of those who are victims of this crime.


From June 16-20, the 26th UNHRC session will continue discussions with a focus on issues related to women, children, people with disabilities and the right to education.


The Council will also consider the situation of human rights in some countries such as Belarus, Syria, Eritrea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
