A court in the southeastern province of Dong Nai sentenced a worker to eight months in jail for stealing from his Taiwanese-invested employer during an anti-China riot last month.
Ha Van Thanh, 47, an employee at the Formosa Tafeta company based in Dong Nai Province’s Nhon Trach 3 Industrial Zone, was convicted of “stealing.”

According to the indictment, after midnight on May 13, Thanh drove a motorbike to the industrial zone to watch a riot that erupted out of peaceful protests against China’s illegal placement of a giant oil rig in Vietnamese waters on May 2.
He reportedly snuck into the Formosa Tafeta factory as he saw no security guards there and made off with two LCD TV monitors and a computer monitor, estimated to be worth VND8.6 million (US$405) in total.
He then stashed the items in the hired apartment of a friend, who is also employed as a worker in Hiep Phuoc Commune.
At around 6 a.m. on May 14, local police conducted a sweep of all worker apartments and found the items.
Thanh was arrested soon afterwards.
