(VOV) – The Vietnam-Philippines Friendship Society made its debut in capital Manila on July 29 in an effort to strengthen friendship and all-round cooperation between the two countries.

The ceremony was attended by former Philippines President Fidel Ramos, Vietnamese ambassador to the Philippines Truong Trieu Duong, and former Miss World Gemma Araneta of the Philippines, as well as other politicians, businesspeople and reporters of GMA, ABS and UNTV TV channels.

The executive board of the society comprises politicians and well-known figures operating in business, education, finance, and agriculture.

Society president Eddie U. IIarde, who is also President of Maharlika Foundation and a GMA TV presenter, said the founding of the society is an important step towards developing closer ties between the Philippines and Vietnam.

The society will make every effort to promote friendship between the two peoples, he said.

Former Philippines President Ramos reviewed major milestones in bilateral relations, as well as their cooperation after Vietnam joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

He expressed hope that the two countries will further broaden their cooperation in all realms.

For his part, ambassador Duong noted the establishment of the association shows both sides’ goodwill toward promoting friendship and mutual understanding between the two peoples, and expanding cooperation, especially in tourism, trade, investment, education, and culture.
